Akke Rahman (39) of Oldham in the UK, began climbing Mount Everest on April 11, 2022, while fasting for Ramadan.
Akke will strive to become the first British Bangladeshi Muslim to top Mount Everest. He has already claimed a UK record time after conquering Europe's highest mountain Mount Elbrus, which sits 5,642 meters above sea level in Russia, within 24 hours and only five days after recuperating from coronavirus. Akke also conquered Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Blanc, Africa's and the Alps' highest peaks correspondingly. He soon topped Mount Amadablam too which is one of the highest summits in the Himalayas at 6,856 meters.
Because of Akke's love of climbing and desire to help people in need, he accomplished all of the above excursions within a year. He is fundraising for Ramadan Family Commitment (RFC), a project of a British Bengali satellite station, Channel S TV, to help refugees, children, women, and families in severe need. Donations have begun in the thousands, and the amount is likely to grow by the end of Ramadan.
Akke Rahman remarked that when he went to a local business to seek assistance with his campaign to climb Mount Everest, many told him that he was insane to ever consider such a feat. “If assisting those in need makes me a crazy person, then we should all become crazy” was his response. He went on to describe that people thinking it's not an Asian or Bengali 'thing' to climb Mount Everest only motivated him to disprove this mindset and leave a legacy for his children.
Akke Rahman, a father of three youngsters, lives in Oldham with his wife Hena Rahman. Hena understands the dangers but admits that Akke is a determined husband and despite urging him not to go in these hazardous missions, he never gives up. Despite the risks and hardships of caring for three young children, Hena voiced her admiration for her husband's perseverance. She is incredibly proud of what Akke is willing to do to help vulnerable refugees, women, and children.
